I'm with you, Jeff; this type of activity puzzles me sometimes as well. However,I agree with the above comment that a twitter-esque application will eventually be important for branding and consumer engagement. (Of course, not everyone will engage with such means of communication...)

There are a lot of "pointless" interchanges with Twitter but we are entering a new realm of marketing where Twitter will be used to actively connect brands with consumers.
